Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive perspiration. It is also called hidrosis or diaphoresis (although diaphoresis can also refer to normal perspiration). Hyperhidrosis can be primary, which means that it occurs all over the body, is present from birth, and is passed down genetically, or secondary, which refers to hyperhidrosis that is localized to a specific location and acquired later in life due to development of conditions such as a thyroid disorder, diabetes, or menopause. Anxiety may worsen symptoms of primary hyperhidrosis because it activates the sympathetic nervous system , which causes increased perspiration.

Primary hyperhidrosis can be treated by multiple methods. One form of treatment is the use of clinical strength deodorant, which contains a higher percentage of aluminum chloride than regular deodorants do. If clinically prescribed deodorants do not curtail sweating, then several different medical treatments may be tried. One is iontophoresis, which involves placing the hands or feet in water that has a very low electrical current running through it; although this method has successfully treated hyperhidrosis since the 1940s, scientists still do not entirely understand why it works. A class of prescription drugs called anticholinergics can also be taken orally for treatment. These may have some side effects such as constipation, but they can be helpful in relieving hyperhidrosis, especially when taken before a stress-causing event. Botulism toxin (Botox) injections in the affected areas can also help, although these injections can be painful and the effects on hyperhidrosis wear off by nine months after each injection.

As a last resort, for cases of extreme hyperhidrosis that are not aided by other methods, surgery can be performed. This can involve the removal of sweat glands or destruction of some sympathetic nerves. However, this also may have many side effects. Many patients experience increased perspiration in other areas of their body after the surgery, which is usually irreversible. In some cases, the nerves that were removed can regenerate, leading excessive perspiration to reoccur in the region where the surgery was performed.

People with hyperhidrosis can make some lifestyle changes to reduce sweating as well. This can include wearing loose-cut clothing in breathable fabrics like cotton, bathing frequently, and limiting spicy foods, hot beverages, and alcohol.

Hauser (2000b) observed what could be labeled embarrassment in a male rhesus monkey. After copulating, the male strutted away and accidentally fell into a ditch. He stood up and quickly looked around. After sensing that no other monkeys saw him tumble, he marched off, back high, head and tail up, as if nothing had happened. Once again, comparative research in neurobiology, endocrinology, and behavior is needed to learn more about the subjective nature of embarrassment.

The best way to learn about the emotional lives of animals is to spend considerable time carefully studying them—conducting comparative and evolutionary ethological, neurobiological, and endocrinological research—and to resist critics' claims that anthropomorphism has no place in these efforts. To claim that one cannot understand elephants, dolphins, or other animals because we are not “one of them” leaves us nowhere. It is important to try to learn how animals live in their own worlds, to understand their perspectives ( Allen and Bekoff 1997 , Hughes 1999 ). Animals evolved in specific and unique situations and it discounts their lives if we only try to understand them from our own perspective. To be sure, gaining this kind of knowledge is difficult, but it is not impossible. Perhaps so little headway has been made in the study of animal emotions because of a fear of being “nonscientific.” In response to my invitation to contribute an essay to my forthcoming book on animal emotions ( Bekoff 2000 ), one colleague wrote: “I'm not sure what I can produce, but it certainly won't be scientific. And I'm just not sure what I can say. I've not studied animals in natural circumstances and, though interested in emotions, I've ‘noticed’ few. Let me think about this.” On the other hand, many other scientists were very eager to contribute. They believed that they could be scientific and at the same time use other types of data to learn about animal emotions; that is, that it is permissible for scientists to write about matters of the heart (although at least one prominent biologist has had trouble publishing such material; Heinrich 1999 , p. 322).

…we are obliged to acknowledge that all psychic interpretation of animal behavior must be on the analogy of human experience…. Whether we will or no, we must be anthropomorphic in the notions we form of what takes place in the mind of an animal. ( Washburn 1909 , p. 13)

The way human beings describe and explain the behavior of other animals is limited by the language they use to talk about things in general. By engaging in anthropomorphism—using human terms to explain animals' emotions or feelings—humans make other animals' worlds accessible to themselves ( Allen and Bekoff 1997 , Bekoff and Allen 1997 , Crist 1999 ). But this is not to say that other animals are happy or sad in the same ways in which humans (or even other conspecifics) are happy or sad. Of course, I cannot be absolutely certain that Jethro, my companion dog, is happy, sad, angry, upset, or in love, but these words serve to explain what he might be feeling. However, merely referring acontextually to the firing of different neurons or to the activity of different muscles in the absence of behavioral information and context is insufficiently informative. Using anthropomorphic language does not have to discount the animal's point of view. Anthropomorphism allows other animals' behavior and emotions to be accessible to us. Thus, I maintain that we can be biocentrically anthropomorphic and do rigorous science.

As the third director of the Carnegie Institution of Washington’s Department of Embryology, Womens Mercer Trousers Second Female 6z5TB9LsHm
made a number of contributions to the life sciences as well as to administration. Corner was born on 12 December 1889 in Baltimore, Maryland, near the newly established Shirt Dress In Stripe With Waist Detail Stripe print Lost Ink Plus 5afy3x
. Although Corner was not exposed to science much in school at a young age, he developed an early appreciation for science through conversations with his father about geography and by looking through the family’s National Geographic magazines.

In 1906 Corner entered Johns Hopkins University , initially intending to study the classics. After spending time on his relatives’ farm observing veterinary medicine, however, his interest in biology began to grow and caused him to change his degree program his sophomore year. After completing his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins, Corner spent the summer at the US Fisheries Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina, where Johns Hopkins biological labs had special privileges. Here he studied protozoa , particularly Cothurnia . His research was then published in 1909 in Notes from the Johns Hopkins Biological Laboratory . Although his interest in protozoology first swayed him toward joining the department of zoology, Corner chose a path in medicine after encouragement from his surgeon cousin, William S. Baer. Soon after his publication Corner enrolled in Johns Hopkins Medical School, where he quickly took advantage of the Medical History Club to feed his interest in the subject. During his studies in the department of anatomy, led by Franklin P. Mall, Corner received instruction from a number of notable professors including Florence R. Sabin (Corner would later assist Sabin in her 2 Pack Skinny Chino Shorts In Navy amp; Stone SAVE Navy/ stone Asos K6RpnH
course), Warren H. Lewis, Herbert Evans, and Eliot R. Clark. While still a new medical student Corner sought to pursue independent research under the direction of Mall on the vasculature of the pancreas. During the summers of 1912 and 1913 Corner volunteered at the Grenfell Medical Mission in Battle Harbor, Labrador, as a medical assistant. During one of his summers at the mission Corner met a fellow volunteer Betsy Lyon Copping, whom he eventually married.

As his graduation from medical school approached, Corner chose to accept a research and teaching assistantship in the department of anatomy after encouragement from Mall. Corner had considered a clinical internship in gynecology under Howard Kelly. However, after Mall recommended that he build a stronger knowledge base before pursuing a clinical career, Corner was convinced that research was his best path. While under Mall’s supervision, Corner undertook an investigation of the ovary’s corpus luteum using sows from a local slaughterhouse. During 1915 Corner began the gynecology internship offered earlier by Kelly. He became discouraged with the lack of physiological foundations in the field, however, and instead sought a career that included both research and clinical experiences. After unsuccessful searches for such a path at Johns Hopkins and other women’s clinics, Corner joined Herbert Evans at the University of California at Berkeley . Evans was recognized as an outstanding anatomist and gave Corner an assistant professorship in anatomy with the opportunity to study metallic detail perforated sneakers White Zespà dVuAgSXkuN
and gynecology to increase his knowledge of reproductive physiology.
